A MOMENT SUSPENDED IN TIME

DEFINE THE GREAT LINE
Role: Principal Designer

This project is a redesign of the cover of the original 2006 album, Define The Great Line, by Florida-based band Underoath. Define The Great Line released in 2006, roughly 10 years to the time of this project, and so the album art is starting to show its age. The goal of this project was simply to re-create the cover in a way that retained the spirit of the original art, but improved upon the visuals.
The original cover has begun to age in a couple of respects. First of all, the album was created near the inception of the band itself and so the album still gives off an 'underground' vibe. While this element is partly what makes the album so good from a musical perspective, Underoath is now a global brand, and their album covers now have a higher standard. From a marketing perspective, the cover looks a little bland and while the photography itself is quite nice, the album really would not stick out off of a store shelf or a Spotify discover weekly page.
To solve these problems, I designed a cover with a little more visual punch, by adding more prominent colors, and slightly more dramatic imagery. In the redesigned cover (see below) there is a more immediately recognizable primary subject standing on the sand dune, while in the original, the figure is easily lost in the left third of the image. In the redesign the figure is also framed within the sun which provides a burst of color that I thought was very much needed in the original.
